A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Anambra State, Chief Paul Chukwuma, has objected to the clamour for the sustenance of the existing zoning arrangement for the governorship in of the state, arguing that the contest should be left open for all.
Chukwuma, who is from Anambra North senatorial zone has shown interest in next year's governorship race.
Many politicians in the state are insisting that the contest should be left for Anambra South where the incumbent governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo comes from.
Those arguing in favour of exclusive contest for aspirants from Anambra South say it is only proper that the zone should complete eight years after which it would go to Anambra Central.
But Chukwuma said the concern of the people of Anambra State should be competence and nothing more.
He said: "Anambra is a homogeneous society, united by a shared culture and religion, with many communities interconnected through heritage.
Despite political divisions, towns like Enugu Ukwu, Nnewi, and Nnobi share cultural ties. Attempts to divide this close-knit society must be discouraged.
Rather than relying on zoning, Anambra's 181 communities should be free to choose the most qualified candidate, regardless of origin.
The people should decide, without politicians limiting their options. Competence, not zoning, should be the deciding factor in electing a governor."
