Senator Victor Umeh representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has awarded scholarships to 223 students from 58 communities in the zone.

The worth of scholarships, totaling N37 million, aims to support brilliant students who lack the financial means to pursue their education. The amount is to cover 2023/2024 academic session.

The total amount was immediately transferred to the account of the beneficiaries while the programme was still on.

Umeh said the scheme will be enhanced next year to accommodate more students and expressed joy in helping deserving students achieve their academic goals.

He emphasized the importance of education in fighting ignorance, poverty, and distress, believing that the beneficiaries would in future become important people in the society.

The scholarship selection process, which was painstaking, involved stakeholders, clergy, and community leaders in the senatorial zone.

The Senator said: "The reason for setting up the scholarship is to help young people. The beneficiaries won't refund the money spent on them.

Those who have benefited from this scholarship should not apply for the federal government's students loan scheme so that those who do not have my scholarship can benefit from the loan scheme. Once you join the scheme, you become a member of the family.

I regard the scholarship as my constituency project. My promise is that I will continue to offer my constituents honest representation."

Umeh's foundation has been providing scholarships for 17 years, with over 300 university graduates, including doctors, lawyers, engineers and other professionals already benefitted from the programme.

Encouraging the beneficiaries to aim high, Senator Umeh shared inspiring stories of past beneficiaries who had excelled in their fields.

He described the initiative as part of his constituency project and demonstrated his commitment to honest service and the development of his people.

At the event, Umeh announced the appointment of a Senior Special Assistant, SSA, on scholarship scheme to handle the project fully.
