82 markets to participate in Anambra sports competition

Traders from eighty two major markets in Anambra State are to participate in the first Anambra Traders Sports Competition scheduled to kick off on October 18, 2023 in the state.


The traders are to compete in football, lawn tennis, table tennis, draught, among other sports.


Draws for the competition took place in Awka on Thursday and was supervised by the Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Patrick Onyedum, assisted by Humphrey Anuna, the President General of Anambra State Amalgamated Market Traders Association, ASMATA.


Speaking during the draws, the ASMTA President spoke on the importance of fair play and called for strict adherence to the rules of the game.


Also speaking, the sports commission chairman, Chief Onyedum reiterated the state government's commitment towards improving sports in the state.


He said the competition was organized essentially to foster greater participation of people across the state in various sports.


He said: “With a substantial prize pool of over N10 million, the competition has captured the attention of the markets.


“Football champions stand a chance to win N3 million, N2 million, and N1 million respectively, while winners in tennis, table tennis, draught, and Ncho categories will earn N500,000, N300,000, and N200,000 respectively."


He commended leaders and traders in the markets for their enthusiasm and eagerness to be part of the sports event.

He said that the preliminary winners will advance to the state finals which will come to a climax on November 26, 2023.
