Three people lost their lives, while five others sustained various degrees of injuries when a trailer rammed onto tricycle operators running away from Anambra State revenue collectors at the Obosi end of the 2nd Niger Bridge.
A statement by the Anambra State sector command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, said 15 people were involved in the crash.
Ag. Sector Public Education Officer of FRSC, Margaret Onabe , in a statement, said seven people were rescued unhurt.
According to an eyewitness, the revenue collectors were stopping touts collecting taxes from tricycle operators when the driver of the Mack truck lost control, and rammed into the other vehicles.
Onabe said eight vehicles comprising a commercial motorcycle, three yellow tricycles, two Toyota Hiace commercial buses, a white Mack trailer and a navy blue Toyota Camry were involved in the crash that occurred on Sunday.
She said that passers -by had already taken the injured persons to the hospital before the arrival of FRSC rescue team from RS5.36 Oraifite Unit command in Anambra State.
"The scene was tensed as hoodlums and angry mob came with machete protesting towards revenue collectors for orchestrating the crash," she state.
Meanwhile, the Anambra Sector Commander of FRSC, Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi has sympathized with the families of the dead victims and wishes the injured victims quick recovery.
He warned motorists to desist from disobeying traffic rules and regulations by servicing their vehicles to minimum safety standard before plying the road, avoid speed, and drive with full concentration. Emphasizing that traffic rules made was to advert crashes.
