Anambra Assembly amends LG law again, pegs tenure at 2 years

By Madu Obi

The Anambra State House of Assembly has amended the State Electoral Law for the third time this year. This time, it pegged the tenure of the elected local government officials to two years.

Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, Hon Obi Nweke said the amendment was necessary so as to avoid a lacuna in future and ensure clarity in the local government system.

The new law, cited as the Anambra State Electoral Law No 3 2024, took effect from September 12, 2024, just 16 days to the conduct of the scheduled local government elections on September 28, 2024.

The amendment inserted a new subsection 4 into Section 110 of the Principal Law, dissolving the local government council at the expiration of a two-year period, commencing from the date of inauguration.

What this means is that both the Chairmen and Councillors will serve a uniform two-year term, unlike the previous law which specified the tenure of only the Chairman and Deputy.

The speaker of the House, Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, presided over the plenary, which completed the three readings of the bill in one sitting, in line with the Standing Order of the House.

It was gathered that the amendment was aimed at avoiding ambiguity and unnecessary litigations in the local government system.
