The Anambra State government has banned all mining activities in the state with immediate effect, citing unauthorized and illegal mining operations that had caused environmental devastation and health hazards in host communities as the reasons.
Already, the state government, through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Sylvia Ifemeje, has directed all miners to cease operations until further notice.
The government's action followed reports of alleged reckless mining activities across the state, which flouted the Mining Act of 2007 and the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law of 2024.
According to the government notice, the suspension affects all miners and requires them to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Environment before resuming operations.
It warned that defaulters risk severe sanctions, including arrest and criminal prosecution, adding that the move is aimed at protecting the environment to ensure responsible mining practices in Anambra State.
