The people of Enugwu Nanka in Orumba North local government area of Anambra State have sent an Save Our Soul (SOS) to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to come to their aid, saying that killings in their community were becoming too much.
In the letter signed by the chairman of Enugwu Nanka village, Joe Omehaa and secretary, Peter Godson Oforkansi, the village union attributed the growing insecurity in the area to the activities of some powerful indigenes, who were allegedly seeking to silence the majority for standing by the truth.
They recalled several incidences of killings, and attempted assassinations in the community, lamenting that the some powerful people were also making it difficult for the police to investigate the killings.
Their letter to the governor read in part: "A boy of 25 years, Mr. Toochukwu Onyemelukwe was murdered in Enugwu Nanka Village square, along the Main Road at the popular Ukwumango Nwanyi Uzo village square.
"This was simply because the young boy was from the opposing faction of the village union, the Enugwu Nanka Village Development Union, against the faction being controlled by the leadership of the community.
"Mr. Martin Okeke, who reported the murder of Mr. Toochukwu Onyemelukwe to the Police, has met many assassination attempts, just because he reported to the Police about that crime.
"Mr. Martin Okeke's life has been continuously threatened by the suspected culprits since they discovered that he reported the murder to the Police. He has not been sleeping in his house and his wife is in exile for fear of being killed."
"We are thinking these factions may result to a total collapse of our dear town if not checked.
Also, we request that the Police be allowed to make proper investigations of crimes in Nanka."
"Your Excellency, you might also have heard of a number of murders of some innocent souls in Nanka perpetrated by unknown killers, but the ones that their killers are known are protected from Police investigation by the rulers and leaders of the powerful, influential and well connected cabals of Nanka Patriotic Union (NPU)."
While appealing to the governor to order for an investigation into the numerous killings of innocent souls in Nanka, they also urged him to investigate reasons for having many factions of the town union, which has resulted to the abnormalities, sacrilege and abomination in Nanka.
