The member representing Awka South 1 constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Mbachu has decried what he described as the obvious omission of provision for local government election in the state's 2024 budget.
The state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, had on Tuesday presented a budget of N410 billion for the 2024 fiscal year.
The budget had already passed a second reading and there are indications that the budget might be passed this week.
Mbachu, who spoke in Awka said that going through the budget presented by the governor, it is glaring that there is no intention by the government to conduct local government election next year.
The lawmaker said: "On page 475 of the budget, the provision for the Anambra State independent Electoral Commission for this current year is N89,120,000.00, while the projected estimate for the incoming year is N129,120,000.00.
“You find out that there’s no feasibility or readiness for local government election for the incoming year."
“I worry so much because this tier of government has suffered so much because of lack of local government election."
"Local government, as the 3rd- tier of government, is the bedrock of governance. Leadership and political tutelage is heavily mounted on this tier of government and should be upheld thus."
“If this can be wishfully considered, I’ll be glad. For now, the budget can go for 2nd reading”.
