The organizers of the Amambra Marathon taking place on Saturday, have said that the winner will get prize money of N1 million, while the second and third place winners will get N500,000 an N300,000 respectively.
The 35 -kilometer race will take off by 7.00 am from the Ogbunike tollgate near the commercial city of Onitsha and terminate at the Emaus House in the heart of Awka.
Prince Ugochukwu Ifeanyi, whose Charity Foundation is organizing the marathon, said in Awka that adequate security arrangement has been made with operatives to cover the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, which is the route of the marathon.
Although Ifeanyi was not specific about the number of participants, he said that hundreds of people have registered for the race after it was advertised.
According to him, the programme is being sponsored by several organizations and government establishments one or the other.
For instance, Ifeanyi said that the Anambra State Ministry of Health and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi , have provided ambulances, as well as drugs and first aid materials for any eventually.
He said the aim of the Foundation is to match or even beat the records of Lagos Marathon, adding that the best talents discovered during the race would be handed over to the Anambra State government to be trained to represent the state at the National Sports Festival.
"Our Foundation is determined to improve sporting activities in our home state and we are partnering with the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Commerce and Wealth Creation, as well as the Ministry of Health.
"We all know the importance of healthy living and sports is part of encouraging good health," he added.
Ifeanyi said the Foundation has offered itself to be part of the transformation agenda of Governor Chukwuma Soludo's administration in the state through the encouragement of healthy practices.
