The Anambra State Police command has smashed an armed gang at Igboukwu in Aguata local government area, killed one suspect and arrested three.
The gang was said to have boarded a commercial bus at Nnewi and when they were stopped at a Police checkpoint for a search, one of them alighted and pulled a Beretta pistol against the police.
He was instantly gunned down by one of the policemen on duty.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, a search of the bag they were travelling with yielded a concealed dagger.
Ikenga said the state Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, who praised the police personnel for their vigilance, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to take over the case for thorough investigation.
"The CP has also ordered the immediate release of two elderly passengers who boarded the bus at a different location", the PPRO said.
He assured the people that the command would always live up to its responsibility in safeguarding lives and property of all law abiding citizens in the state.
