To encourage farmers in Anambra State, the governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has given N3 million and a tricycle to this year's best yam farmer in the state.
He also awarded ₦1 million each to the top four yam producers.
The awards were announced at the 2024 Anambra State New Yam Festival, which took place at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
Soludo, who described himself as a subsistence farmer, vowed to double his efforts to produce the biggest yams to enable him emerge as the best yam producer in 2025.
He mandated his appointees and businessmen to engage in farming, specifically yam production, to compete with him for the yam producer of the year in the November 2025 edition.
According to the governor, the competition is part of his "Farm to Feed" policy, aimed at boosting farming, improving yields, and reducing prices .
The state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Don Onyenji, described new yam festival as a symbolic traditional event that brings the Igbo people together to showcase their cultural heritage.
