Two brothers suspected to be robbers were burnt to death in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State on Wednesday.
The incident took place around Bida area of the city and people were seen watching as they struggled in the fire and eventually died.
While some people at the scene sympathized with them, others said they deserved the punishment, adding that they were provoking hardworking people under the present hardship in the country.
Reacting to the incident, the Anambra Police Command condemned the jungle justice, even as it described the suspects as members of a notorious armed robbery gang.
The state Police Public Relations Officer( PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga said: "The Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye has condemned the act and reiterated his call for members of the public to always take criminal offenders to the nearest Police Station for necessary police actions and proper conduct of appropriate investigations.
"Meanwhile, preliminary information reveal that the two male suspects, who were later simply identified as Omanume and Monday, were members of a notorious armed robbery gang led by one Itanda who is already in the Correctional Service Custodial Centre."
"The gang is alleged to be responsible for several acts of attack and the dispossession of traders and unsuspecting victims of their personal belongings at the Main Market, Onitsha."
