By Madu Obi

There is apprehension at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, following the alleged kidnap of a female student in the Department of Science Education, Francisca Chioma.

Chioma was reportedly on her way to a burial ceremony outside Awka, the Anambra State capital on Friday and has not been heard from since then.

Her close friend and schoolmate said Chioma’s whereabouts had remained a mystery.

There are growing fears in the university that she may have been abducted along the remote area of Omasiuno in Omambala part of Anambra State.

Her fellow students said attempts to reach her via phone have proved futile, as her line has continually remained unresponsive.

The Chief Security Officer of the institution, Ken Chukwurah, has confirmed the disappearance of Chioma.

Chukwurah said: “Yes it is true. DSS has been fully in the picture since yesterday. We are working with them. "

"We got information that one of our students was on her way to attend a funeral ceremony in a village outside Awka when the incident happened and since then, she has not been found.”

He emphasized that the incident did not happen within the school premises, but during Chioma’s journey to the funeral ceremony.

He added that relevant security agencies have been alerted, adding that the kidnappers have made contact with the family.

The ransom being demanded by the kidnappers has, however, not been made known.
