There was pandemonium at Atani headquarters of Ogbaru local government area weekend when arsonists invaded the area and destroyed four patrol vehicles belonging to the vigilante groups.
It was gathered that the assailants, who went in large numbers on motorcycles and a vehicle, began shooting indiscriminately inside the premises of the local government.
According to an eye witness, the arsonists faced strong resistance from the vigilante operatives until the police response team arrived.
The state Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that due to the superior firepower of the security operatives, the gunmen fled the scene.
Ikenga said that unfortunately, four operational vehicles of the security operatives were engulfed in flames and severely damaged.
He explained that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the joint security force comprising the Army, Navy, and other security agencies, has visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, adding that there is an ongoing onslaught operation to apprehend the culprits.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam has condemned the attack, describing the armed arsonists as cowards.
He also commended his men for the prompt response, assuring the people of continued and strengthened collaboration in the fight against criminal elements in the state.
