Shooting in Ifete area of Awka, the capital of Anambra State has claimed many lives.
This came barely five days after a similar incident at Nibo in Awka South local government area claimed 12 lives.
Details of Thursday's shooting which took place near the gate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University were still sketchy, but eyewitness said at least seven bodies were seen littered in the area after the shooting.
An eye witness said some of the victims were tricycle operators, fueling speculation that it might be cult related.
According to a source who is a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the shooting scared residents of the area, forcing them to run for their lives.
He said that he had to make a u- turn, adding that he saw at least seven dead bodies on his way home.
Another eye witness who operates a business in the vicinity said: " We started hearing gun shots in the morning and suddenly, many keke operator were seen driving back from UNIZIK to the town. It was later that we saw some dead bodies along the road".
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident said that police response team has been drafted to the area.
He said that further details on the incident will be communicated shortly.
