Breaking: Anambra to conduct LG election September 28

By Madu Obi

After two years as governor and with demands by Civil Society Organizations and other stakeholders, the Professor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration has finally announced that local government election will be conducted in the state on September 28 this year.

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) announced the decision through a press statement on Monday.

Governor Soludo had last week inaugurated the members of the commission and charged them to give Anambra people a clean and credible election.

It was gathered that the local government election formed part of the deliberations at the state's weekly Executive Council meeting on Monday.

The statement signed by the chairman of ANSIEC, Genevieve C. Osakwe said:

"The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered political parties and the general public that local government elections in the state will be held on Saturday September 28, 2024.

Election timetable/schedule of activities and other details can be collected from the headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, 14th August, 2024."

The local government election was last held in the state in 2013 during the final year of former Governor Peter Obi.

Since then, subsequent administrations in the state have been using caretaker committees to run the third - tier of government and the resultant effect is that there has not been any meaningful development in the various communities in the state.

Monday's announcement by ANSIEC, however, took politicians and political parties by surprise as they have barely six weeks to nominate and campaign for the election.
