The President General of Umunze Progressive Union, UPU, Engr. Ezekiel Iheazor and a chieftain of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Nze Ikechukwu Okoli have been abducted in Umunze. They were abducted in the house of Okoli in Lomu village in Umunze
The PG was said to be on a visit to Iykon's house, when the kidnappers struck. It was gathered that because of the heavy rain at the time of the incident, and the abductors shot sporadically before taking the two men away.
An indigene of the community said: "My brother, it is true. Umunze is in confusion. Our PG and Iykon were kidnapped.
Today is Ǹkwọ, our major market day, and it has been raining heavily. I heard heavy gunshots from my house, but because of the rain I could not come out to know the direction it was coming from, although I knew it was not too far from my house.
When the rain stopped, I called my friend around the market to inquire. He assured me that nothing happened around the market, but as soon as I dropped the call, one community leader called me to drop the bad news.
When we went to Okoli's house, the PG's car was parked there. The kidnappers were said to have operated in a Highlander jeep.
Umunze is in a very bad mood now; there is confusion in the town. We have not heard anything from them yet."
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said he was not aware of the incident.
He, however, said that there is a difference between kidnapping and abduction, adding that kidnappers usually ask for ransom which had not happened in this case.
He said he would get in touch with the Umunze Divisional Police Officer to know if such an incident took place.
