Following the trending N585 million graft involving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, the national chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mr. Sly Ezeokenwa has called on President Bola Tinubu to order a comprehensive investigation of the Ministry.
Addressing reporters in Awka, Ezeokenwa described as troubling the revelations from the ministry about the misuse of allocation of funds meant for vulnerable individuals.
According to him, with the kind of shameful information coming out from that ministry, there is urgent need for government officials to prioritize public welfare and address the critical issues affecting the nation.
He expressed concern over the data obtained from the Budget Office, which revealed that the ministry, formerly known as Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, received a whooping N2.38tn from 2020 to 2024.
"Despite this substantial financial allocation, many Nigerians still struggle with poverty, prompting concerns that these funds may have been misappropriated and possibly diverted to private accounts, instead of reaching those in greatest need", he said.
Ezeokenwa stressed the need for Nigeria to confront and eradicate corruption, adding that it is an essential requirement for economic development, stating that APGA remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the responsible use of public funds for the benefit of Nigerians.
He commended President Tinubu for his prompt and decisive action on the matter so far, including directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the matter, as well as the suspension of the Minister, to facilitate an investigation into the N585m scandal within the ministry.
This, he observed, shows a commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.
