Following the death a student in an unfortunate road accident that occured in the premises of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu State, the institute and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have read the riot act to students.
The deceased victim, Chiamaka Ozoigbondu, a student of Peaceland College of Health Science and Technology, Emene in Enugu, was hacked down by a graduating student of IMT, who in a celebratory mood in school premises, recklessly rammed his car into a crowd of students, killing the victim and injuring two other students.
Irked by the development and students' disobedience to earlier warning by the leadership of the institution not to engage in any form of celebration but to leave the school quietly after their final year examinations, the IMT Management has banned "all forms of celebration after examinations in the institute.
In the same vein, the Joint Campus Council Enugu State of NANS, has directed "the immediate prohibition of the use of vehicles and other laud and reckless signing-out parades in all tertiary institution in Enugu State."
NANS which extended its deep condolence to the family and friends of the deceased student, commended the Acting Rector of IMT, Dr. Emeka Ejim, "for his prompt response and support. His leadership and hands-on approach during this difficult time have been exemplary," they added.
The IMT Acting Rector, Dr. Ejim, who announced the ban in a circular on Wednesday said that the school management had commiserated with the family of the deceased and has declared a three-day mourning period from Wednesday to Friday in the institution.
He said, “Following this regrettable mishap, the Institute, in an emergency joint meeting of Management and Academic Board on October 2, 2024, resolved that all forms of celebration after examinations are hereby banned in the Institute.
“Students found celebrating within the Institute will face expulsion, and no amount of pressure will make IMT rescind it.”
Ejim gave out other decisions of the management which included that vehicles within the campus will not be allowed to exceed the speed limit of 20 kilometres per hour, adding that, “Any driver found violating this rule shall be arrested and handed over to law enforcement agents.
"Law enforcement officers will no longer be allowed to escort students into IMT for any reason. Their presence makes it impossible for IMT security men to control the students."
Stressing that subsequent examinations would be conducted under strict supervision in the polytechnic, Ejim said that, "henceforth, students taking part in all examinations must wear their departmental uniforms and identity cards."
Meanwhile, NANS in its statement issued by the Chairman, Joint Campus Council Enugu State, Ali Cajetan, also urged the instructions to enforce reasonable speed limit to ensure safety.
