By Madu Obi

ANAMBRA State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has said that acquiring education without making sports part of the curriculum is incomplete.

The governor, who spoke through the Anambra State Director of Sports Development Commission, Mr. Patrick Umedum at the closing ceremony of Under 12 Sports Competition in Awka, explained that it was for that reason that his administration embedded sports in education.

The competion was organized by the State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Board, UBEC, Abuja.

Commending the organizers of the competition, Soludo stated that it is good that Anambra is catching them young, assuring that consistent efforts would continue to be made to promote school sports in the state.

"I look forward to seeing some of the pupils participating in this competition become winners at national and international competitions in future", he said.

In her speech, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi observed that the competition was made possible because Governor Soludo paid the counterpart fund for 2019, 2020 and 2022 UBE grants.

According to her, sports play a vital role in shaping people as all -round graduates by developing them not only intellectually, but also emotionally, socially and physically.

While urging the pupils to always exhibit teamwork, discipline and fair play in competitions, she reminded them that winning is not everything, but that participation, sportsmanship and having fun, are.

"We will continue to invest in programmes that promote holistic development. We will also continue to celebrate excellence, creativity and teamwork. Let us build a brighter future for our children by encouraging sports in schools" Nwadinobi added.

Participants at the competition were drawn from the six educational zones of the state namely, Aguata, Awka, Ogidi, Nnewi, Onitsha and Otuocha. The winners were later decorated with medals.
