Election Petition: Tony Nwoye floors Stella Oduah *As tribunal declares Oyi/Ayamelum House of Reps

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has dismissed the petition of Senator Stella Oduah and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the victory of Dr Tony Nwoye of the Labour Party in the February 25, 2023 poll for Anambra North senatorial zone for lack of merit.


The tribunal also declared the election for Oyi/Ayamelum federal constituency inconclusive and ordered for a rerun.


Senator Oduah and her party in a consolidated petition: EPT/AN/SEN/1/2023 & EPT/AN/SEN/2/2023, had challenged the declaration of Dr Tony Nwoye as a validly elected Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial district by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).


The Election petition Tribunal in its ruling on the matter in Awka on Wednesday dismissed the case for lack of merit.


The National Assembly Election Tribunal in Awka upheld the victory of Dr Tony Nwoye and the Labour Party in the Anambra North Senatorial election held on February 25th, 2023.


The tribunal also dismissed all grounds of the petition filed by Stella Oduah and PDP for lack of merit.


Recall that Dr Tony Nwoye of the Labour Party was declared the winner of Senatorial district after scored 94,779 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Stella Oduah who polled a total of 50,146 votes.


In another ruling, the tribunal nullified the election of Hon. Maureen Chinwe Gwacham of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, as the member representing Oyi/Ayamelum federal constituency.


The tribunal in a petition filed by Hon. Uchenna Okafor (Wiper) of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, ordered for a re-run in eight polling units in Umueje ward, Ayamelum LGA.


Mrs Gwacham was declared the winner of the February 25 National Assembly poll after INEC declared her votes as 15299, while Hon. Okafor scored 13332 votes,


The Labour Party candidate, Chira Obiora Uzochukwu scored 8159 votes with the former incumbent House of Representatives PDP member, Hon. Vincent Ofumelu scoring 6912 votes.


Meanwhile, the petition by PDP's Ofumelu was struck out.
