Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) have staged a peaceful protest in Awka to condemn the alleged use of Police to harass and detain their colleagues by the management of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

The Deputy President (South) of NUEE, Joe Oforka said the company's management has been collaborating with the police to arrest and detain workers at the Armed Robbery Unit in Awkuzu over alleged extortion charges.

According to him, the union has made repeated appeals for the release of the detained workers, who he said, have been held for over five days, but the management has refused to act.

The union leadership has demanded the immediate release of the detained staff and put an end to the mistreatment of workers, who are being treated like common criminals.

He called for a halt to the harassment and detention of workers, urging the EEDC management to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the issues when they arise.

He said the protest was a response to the management's refusal to address the situation through internal mechanisms.

The union also vowed to continue the protest until their demands were met.
