Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Afojulu Ozoemena, will on Friday, December 1, lead the valedictory session for the slain erstwhile chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Enugu, Chief Oyibo Chukwu.

The event slated at 10am will hold at the Auditorium of the Enugu State High Court Headquarters, Independent Layout, Enugu.

Already the Chief Judge’s office has confirmed to newsmen that Justice Ozoemena “will personally lead the session."

The CJ's decision to lead the valedictory session, the office said, "follows his deep regard for the NBA, his respect for this erudite, vibrant and eloquent lawyer famous for fighting for the downtrodden, as well as his deep personal distress at the manner Chief Oyibo was murdered."

Oyibo Chukwu, it could be recalled was the Labour Party (LP) candidate for the 2023 Enugu East Senatorial District election and was excitedly campaigning to win before his assassination three days to the election, while returning from a meeting in his hometown of Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government.

He was ambushed by unknown gunmen at Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Governments, his personal assistant travelling with him in the same Sienna van, Sunday Igweshi, was also killed and they were burnt alongside the vehicle.

His family categorically stayed then that it was a political assassination. His younger brother, Professor Arthur Chukwu, of the Nigerian Law School in Yola, Adamawa State, told newsmen that, “The killings were politically motivated. He was coasting home to victory as events have now fully confirmed."

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) changed the date for Enugu East senatorial election because of the murder from February 22 to March 18, the same day the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections were conducted throughout the country and eventually Oyibo's younger brother whom Labour Party chose to replace him, Sir Kelvin Chukwu won the poll.
