Executive Bill on consolidated account undemocratic, LP lawmaker tells Soludo

By Madu Obi

The executive bill sent to the Anambra State House of Assembly requiring the newly elected local government chairmen to contribute part of their allocations to a consolidated account is causing disquiet in the state, with the Labour Party member representing Awka South 1constituency, Hon Henry Mbachu urging Governor Chukwuma Soludo to withdraw it in the interest of democracy.

Expressing concerns about the bill, Mbachu argued that it has the potential for negative impacts as it would restrict local governments from managing their allocations from the Federation Account.

He pointed out that the bill could also compromise Governor Soludo's integrity and have adverse effects on the democratic environment in Anambra State.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to monitor governors who might undermine progress in local governments as they are likely to compel elected chairmen to divert funds to the state government.

The bill provides that all allocations to the local governments shall be paid into a joint account with the state from where monies would be allocated to them as prescribed by the state House of Assembly.

Mbachu said the bill will counter that progress, and potentially rubbish the achievement of compulsory local government elections

The LP lawmaker said his public disagreement and refusal to support the bill demonstrate his commitment to core democratic values.
