President Bola Tinubu has described the late first civilian governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife as a man of peace and one of those who fought for the unity of Nigeria.
The President, who spoke through the governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma at the burial of the elder statesman at Igboukwu in Aguata local government area of Anambra State, observed that Ezeife was also a human rights activist.
Ezeife was elected governor in 1992, but the military cut short his administration through a coup.
"Ezeife was a courageous fighter and he
died at the time Nigeria needed his developmental ideas the more," Tinubu said.
According to him, the former federal permanent secretary had a towering influence and his leadership credentials in Nigeria’s political landscape was second to none.
He prayed for the repose of Dr. Ezeife and urged those he left behind to strive to sustain his indelible legacies.
In his speech, the state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo promised to carry the banner of the ideals and beliefs of Ezeife forward.
Describing his demise as the end to an era, Soludo observed that as the governor of Anambra State, Ezeife did not discriminate on the basis of tribe, state of origin or religion, as he based his appointments on merit and excellence.
