The Anambra State government has warned its citizens residing in flood-prone areas to be on the alert following the fast rising of the River Niger.
Eight local government areas namely, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha South, Awka North, Ihiala, Ogbaru and Ekwusigo are the areas annually affected by the flood.
A government statement said the warning became necessary following a report by the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Mr. Umar Mohammed that many parts of the country would be flooded.
Mohammed attributed the rising floodwaters to activities in Niger Republic and Mali, which are gradually moving towards Nigeria, starting with Kebbi State.
According to him, the floodwaters from countries in the River Niger basin are expected to peak by the end of August and into September, posing a significant risk to communities along the river.
He said that dam operators at Kainji and Jebba, situated on the River Niger, have been informed and are on standby, noting that they are not currently releasing water from their reservoirs as of August 22.
In order not to be taken unawares, the Anambra State government urged the people to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
It advised the affected local government areas to be prepared for potential flooding and to take proactive measures to protect their properties and livelihoods.
Government said it is working closely with relevant agencies to monitor the situation and provide support to affected communities.
Already, the state government has established 27 holding camps in upland areas in readiness for the impending flood.
