Leaders of thought in Awka, the Anambra State capital, under the aegis of Ozo Awka, have identified the absence of town union executive in the state capital as the reason for security concerns and youth restiveness in the area.

President of Ozo Awka, Dr. M. N. Nwofor and general secretary, Chief Ndubuisi Nwakalo, in a statement made available to reporters, said although they had an election to produce the President General of Awka, the exercise has remained inconclusive.

They lamenting that all their efforts to have a unified election since then have not been successful and called for the state government's intervention.

The statement read in part: "We are concerned that Awka Community has remained without a centrally elected town union executive for many years and this unfortunate situation has not only impeded centralized governance and control, but also exacerbated security concerns and youth restiveness within the metropolis.

More worrying is the negative impact that the absence of an elected President General is bound to have on the implementation of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law in Awka, as we presently do not have a PG to carry out the important duties assigned to the holder of that office under the security law.

Ozo Awka, therefore, implores His Excellency the governor of Anambra State to use his good offices to right the wrongs of the past by paving the way for the conduct of free and fair town union election in Awka at the soonest possible date, to fill the glaring leadership vacuum and avoid further erosion of constituted authority and deterioration of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence."

They, however, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for what they described as the gradual, but steady restoration of law and order in Awka Capital Territory, which, they observed, has led to noticeable de-escalation of incidents of kidnapping, cult - related violence and the needless and avoidable wastage of life of youths and future leaders at their prime.

They also commended the governor for his infrastructural development of the state, particularly Awka City.

"We note that since the inception of the state, Awka has not witnessed such structured and targeted governmental development efforts.

In particular, we commend the governor for the completed and ongoing projects such as erosion control and internal roads, upgrade and facelift of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, the permanent Government House, the new flyover linking Ifite village with Amaudo across the expressway, the Awka Amusement Park and the shopping mall", the leaders stated.
