Gunmen attack: Excitement as Nnewi South LG secretariat re-opens.

By Madu Obi

There was excitement at the headquarters of Nnewi South local government area, Ukpor, Anambra State following the reopening of the secretariat after two years of unknown gunmen attack.

The gunmen, at the time, also attacked and burnt the nearby police station in the area, leaving it in ruins.

Ukpor is among communities along the Awka Etiti - Utuh- Lilu- Orsumoghu- Azia- Mbosi - Isekke road that became a no go area following the activities of the unknown gunmen in parts of Anambra South senatorial zone.

The Nnewi South local government headquarters, which is off the road, had remained closed ever since and even villages close to the secretariat were deserted.

The joy of the people, therefore, knew no bounds as they saw the Transition Committee Chairman of the local government , Ikenna Aniagboso, enter his office for the first time in two years.

In fact, government activities in Nnewi South were being conducted in the neighbouring Nnewi North local government headquarters in Nnewi until the recent resumption of the local government chairman.

Amongst those present during the reopening of the secretariat were House of Assembly members representing Nnewi South I and II constituencies, Nonso Atuchukwu and Johnbosco Akaegbobi.

Also in attendance was the Anglican Bishop of Amichi Diocese, Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor, who performed the re-dedication ceremony of the secretariat, as well as other stakeholders and workers of the council.
