Hundreds of widows, including physically challenged, on Thursday stormed the official residence of the governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, seeking immediate assistance to mitigate the present hunger in the country.
Most of the women said they had to go to the Governor's Lodge following information that the wife of the governor, Nonye Soludo, had invited them for help.
However, many of them were frustrated as they were turned back at the gate where screening was taking place.
Some of them who wanted to create a scene were advised by security operatives to go home, adding that only those who received official invitation would be allowed to go beyond the first gate
The scene at the Governor's Lodge was chaotic, with many struggling to gain entry.
Police officers were also seen at the outside gate screening the crowd, with some of them insisting that although they did not get any official invitation, they decided to come because they are also widows from Anambra State.
One of the women who came from Nawfia in Njikoka local government area said: "I was told that the governor wants to see us for help, but I'm finding it difficult because they said some people had been chosen earlier and given identification numbers. I don't have any number, but I need help. I had to jump into a bus to Awka this morning, thinking I would be lucky."
It was gathered that the invitation of the women was at the instance of the Governor's wife, Nonye Soludo, who has initiated several programmes to cushion the effects of hardship on the lives of less privileged persons in the state.
Another woman who spoke while hanging around the gate said such assistance should have been channeled through the women leaders of the various communities for effective distribution.
