Apparently tired of the present economic hardship, a 72-year-old retired soldier has allegedly committed suicide in Makurdi, Benue State.
Identified as Francis Dooga, the deceased ex-soldier was said to had hanged himself at about 6:00pm on Sunday, January 28, 2024, on a tree in his residence which is opposite St. Joseph Catholic Church Iniongun, a suburb of Makurdi.
Confirming the incident, a neighbour, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that Dooga popularly known as ‘old soldier’, committed the act when all his family members have left home.
Some residents of the area who are in shock over the incident noted that the late retired soldier had earlier complained of hardship, just as others disclosed that he had also complained that one of his children was always withdrawing his pension whenever it is paid.
Furthermore, he was also said to have complained about not getting his pension in bulk from the pension board.
One of the residents “Before committing suicide, the man was always complaining of his Security Department Allowance (SDA) which was released by the Federal Government to the Defence Headquarters and which was in turn released to the military pension board."
"He said the pension was being released to them meagerly instead of in bulk monthly like their junior ones, resulting to abject poverty and abandonment by his family members.”
