Following allegation by some interested parties in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, that the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, is planning to impose someone as his successor, the Vice Chancellor has debunked it, insisting that he has no powers to install a Vice Chancellor.
Prof Esimone’s five-year tenure will end in June, 2024 and many professors in the institution who are showing interest in the race, are already adopting all manner of styles to get Professor Esimone on their side, to emerge the next VC of UNIZIK.
But Esimone has told them that it is not in his power to appoint his successor, adding that it is the prerogative of the visitor, President Bola Tinubu, through the governing council of the university to do so.
Reacting on behalf of the Vice Chancellor on the issue on Monday, his special adviser on media and public relations, Dr. Emma Ojukwu said: "The Vice Chancellor does not have the power to install an acting Vice Chancellor.
This is the duty of the governing council of the university. But in this case the governing council is yet to be reconstituted.
"The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, will appoint an acting Vice Chancellor in accordance with the necessary university laws."
"The Vice Chancellor, Prof Charles Okechukwu Esimone, is more interested in his continuing efforts to find solutions to various challenges facing the university."
"As he prepares to vacate office in early June, it is his wish to leave office with a united university."
"He pledges to cooperate with whoever emerges as Acting Vice Chancellor in the interest of peace and unity of the university."
