IT was a mournful atmosphere on Sunday in the industrial town of Nnewi following the sudden death of the Senator representing Anambra South senatorial district, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah in the United Kingdom
At the headquarters of Ikemba Front, his support group in Awka set up for the 2025 Amambra governorship election, flags were flown at half-mast in his honour. The group has also declared seven days mourning for the Senator.
The group was one of the emerging structures being put in place by the late Senator in readiness for next year's governorship election.
At his Otolo Nnewi country home, people gathered around the massive compound, even as the entrance gate was securely locked.
The large number of security operatives usually stationed in the vicinity, was totally absent.
A statement by the group’s national coordinator, Sir Arinze Awogu said the members were yet to come to terms with the story that the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship hopeful is no more.
The statement called on members to remain strong and steadfast as the objective of their mission would continue.
The group vowed not to forget the ideals of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, with a statement that read, "To die completely, one is forgotten, but he that is not forgotten, is not dead."
Also sighted at the headquarters was the convener and leader of Anambra Former Political Appointees (2014 - -2022), Owelle Onyeka Mbaso whose group recently defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, to APC.
Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in following Senator Ubah's death.
The governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, in his condolence message, expressed profound shockAnambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze has described the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as a big loss to the legislative institution in Nigeria.
In his condolence message, Hon Udeze said Senator Ubah's death has created a great vacuum in the political space in the country.
He also described the late Anambra South senator as a consummate and selfless politician, business mogul, sports developer and promoter, as well as a philanthropist and a devout christian.
Extolling his contributions to the development of his community, Nnewi and beyond, Udeze noted that the late lawmaker was a vocal voice in the Senate and eulogized him for using legislative instruments to uplift the living conditions of his constituents through various employment and empowerment opportunities.
Udeze said he was deeply pained by the death of the distinguished parliamentarian, stressing that his death was a true definition of "untimely death".
While consoling the immediate family, the people of Nnewi and Anambra South Senatorial zone and indeed Nigeria on the irreparable loss, he prayed God to grant the soul of the distinguished Senator eternal rest.
Also, a chieftain of the Labour Party, LP, and a governorship aspirant for next year's election, Mr Valentine Ozigbo said it was with deep sadness and shock that he received the news of the passing of Senator Ubah.
According to Ozigbo, Senator Ubah exemplified how one could overcome limitations through unwavering dedication and make a significant impact on his community, state and country.
He said Ubah’s ambitions in life which propelled him to where he found himself, served as an inspiration to many young Nigerians, adding that his success demonstrated that with hard work and conviction, one can achieve greatness in any field.
