PRESIDENTS General of the various communities in Anambra State have been urged to ensure the implementation of the sickle cell law on genotype compatibility before marriage to reduce the rate of the spread of the disease in the state.
The director of sickle cell orphanage and underprivileged home in Anambra State, Mrs Aisha Maduagwu made the call when she led vulnerable children from the home to the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon Tonycollins Nwabunwanne.
Sighting the Anambra State Sickle Cell Law, which empowers the PGs of town unions to ensure strict compliance of genotype compatibility among intending marriage couples in their respective domains, Maduagwu pleaded with the Commissioner to require full adherence from the town union and local government authorities in the state to help in mitigating the births of sickle cell children.
She spoke intensely on the need for government to direct relevant authorities to give support in the area of sickle cell sensitization and genotype education across all communities in the state.
She also lamented the inability of the Association of Sickle Cell Disorders to get a permanent location, alleging that some people have been frustrating every noble move made by her group to sustain the lives of sickle cell patients.
Addressing the children and their leader, Nwabunwanne pledged to assist vulnerable children living with sickle cell disorder with every necessary support needed for their continued survival.
Touched by the burdensome responsibilities of managing such a large number of vulnerable sickle cell children, the Commissioner commended the association for keeping faith with the state government and promised sustainable intervention to ameliorate their sad plights.
He gave financial assistance to the children to support their upkeep, assuring that he would also exploit every necessary channel to address thier grievances.
