It was jubilation galore on Thursday among members of the Labour Party (LP) as the Supreme Court affirmed Julius Abure as the party's National Chairman.
The Supreme Court judgment which dismissed Lamidi Apapa-led faction's case, brought to an end the distractions of the party by its enemies.
In a significant ruling that also concluded a long-standing legal dispute within the Labour Party, the apex Court dismissed the case filed by the Apapa-led faction, confirming Julius Abure as the authentic National Chairman of the Labour Party.
Thursday's judgment also solidified Achonu as the sole gubernatorial candidate for the forthcoming Imo State governorship election.
The feud between the two factions had persisted for months, with Lamidi Apapa consistently challenging the legitimacy of Julius Abure’s leadership within the party.
Central to this dispute was the candidacy of Achonu, the Labour Party’s candidate for the Imo State gubernatorial election scheduled for November.
"Apapa’s legal maneuvers aimed to limit the eligibility of gubernatorial candidates in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa States to those selected through primary elections conducted under his faction’s auspices, undermining the authority of the Abure faction.
This set the stage for a legal showdown that culminated in the Supreme Court’s ruling.
"The Supreme Court’s decision not only upholds Julius Abure as the National Chairman but also affirms Achonu as the legitimate gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Imo State.
This clarity is expected to bring relief to party members and supporters who have been caught in the crossfire of this internal party dispute.
