A South African- based Anambra activist, Boniface Okonkwo, has been held in a prison custody in Nnewi since January 3, 2024 due to what was described as a legal hiccup.

Okonkwo was arrested by the men of the Police Area Command in Oraifite, Ekwusigo local government area, while on Christmas holidays and he claimed that the arrest was instigated by his town's man, Chief Emeka Offor.

As at June 12, Okonkwo had spent 156 days in detention, with his case facing multiple delays due to legal issues, coupled with the recent NLC strike and the usual Monday sit at home.

However, Okonkwo's case has been scheduled to be heard on June 13 and 20, 2024, at the Nnewi High Court where he is expected to face charges related to cybercrime.

His case has attracted the attention of stakeholders in his community who have called for a peaceful resolution to the matter, considering the lengthy period he has spent in detention.
