The Senior Special Assistant on public enlightenment to the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Oliver Okpala has described the judgment of the Supreme Court affirming local government autonomy as a historic ruling that would transform the entire country for rapid development.
Okpala, who spoke to journalists said the judgment was a victory for democracy, adding that it would help to inspire the confidence of the people in democratic processes.
Okpala said: "Since those at the local government level are now autonomous, they can now be free to operate and they would be able to serve the masses and impact their lives for the overall progress of the nation, especially those at the grassroots.
This would help to breed peace and stability at the local governments as the move would free more resources to tackle the high level of insecurity across the country, which is rooted at the local levels.
Governors who have been tampering with local government allocations have been stifling the system and causing backwardness. This landmark judgment has cured this perennial political ailment in our polity."
He commended the judiciary for its courage and clarity of thoughts that resulted in resolving the long standing problem and called on local government chairmen to justify the confidence reposed in them by not just the judiciary but the populace that have been clamouring for the change.
Okpala added: "The work and discretion that went into the struggle that culminated in this judicial victory shows that the Bola Tinubu- led administration is set to undertake some bold and progressives tasks of repositioning the country"
It clearly shows that the government is a people centric one that prioritizes the welfare and good of the common man and not just a few rich people.
Nigerians should see this feat as a spur to support the APC -led government as this would encourage them to embark on more people - centred reforms that would rescue the country from the various strangleholds that has held it down for long.
This has clearly shown that the APC- led federal government is committed to the task of economic emancipation of the downtrodden from their plight of social quagmire"
