Awka- Positive signs for the conduct of local government election in Anambra State have emerged with the inauguration of members of the State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Governor Soludo, who performed the function at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, charged them to render nothing short of sterling service to the people of the state.
The commission has Genevieve Osakwe, a Magistrate , as chairman, while Mrs. Bernadine Obande, Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh and Mr. John Emeka Okeke are members.
Terms of reference of the Commission include to organize, undertake and supervise all elections and matters pertaining to elections to the elective offices in the local government councils in the state.
According to the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024, other functions of the commission include division of local governments into such number of wards or constituencies as prescribed by law for the purpose of the elections to be conducted by the commission.
Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, and the opposition political parties in the state have been clamouring for the LG election, reminding the governor that he promised during his electioneering campaign to conduct it within six months of his assumption of office.
