A pressure group has asked the embattled national chairman of the Labour Party, Chief Julius Abure to be courageous enough to step aside for the Senator Nenadi Usman - led caretaker committee recently appointed by stakeholders of the party to settle down for the great task ahead.
The group, known as “Oga Ndi Oga” Foundation, advised that instead of making moves to drag issues with the caretaker committee over the leadership of LP, Abure should be grateful to God for the opportunity given to him to serve in the past.
The Founder/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Foundation, Chief Godwin Agbasimelo, who is a member of Board of Trustee (BoT) of the party urged Abure to resist the temptation of being “selfish and greedy”.
"He (Abure) should be grateful to God for granting him the golden opportunity to serve as the National Chairman of the party when God zoomed it into national limelight as one of the two major opposition political parties in the country", Agbasimelo said.
He wondered what Abure was still looking for after raking in billions of naira as National Chairman during what could be described as the booming era of the party.
According to him, Abure's period was when the party had the opportunity to sell nomination forms to thousands of political aspirants nationwide and produced a state governor, senators, members of House of Representatives and members of the State Houses of Assembly in many states across the country.
He accused Abure of poor attitude and total neglect of stakeholders of the party, adding that he also neglected critical issues affecting the party, particularly in Anambra State.
Agbasimelo recalled how Abure abandoned him and the governorship candidate of the party that was kidnapped and has not been released since 2021.
He added: ”I made Labour Party what it is today. People like late Senator Ifeanyi Uba and Senator Andy Uba had at different times used Labour Party to run for governorship election in Anambra State, but couldn’t make any meaningful impact on the party.
They used and dumped the party, but I picked up the party, nurtured and groomed it to a mass movement in Anambra State .
Subsequently, Peter Obi came on board and the party became a hurricane at the national level under Abure as national Chairman
But to my greatest surprise Labour Party raked in billions of naira from 2023 general election through sale of nomination forms to thousands of aspirants as President, Governors, Senate, House of Reps and House of Assembly elections.
And up till this moment, Abure has never deemed it right enough to ask of me and the family of the 2021 governorship candidate.
He never considered it right enough to send even a bag of rice to the family of the kidnapped governorship candidate, knowing that the family has apparently lost their bread winner”.
He called on those who are trying to follow Abure to drag issue with Senator Usman to retrace their steps and join hands with the caretaker committee to move the party forward in readiness for taking over the helm of affairs in 2027.
"Abure has overstayed his welcome and needs just to thank God and step aside for Labour Party to move forward," Agbasimelo said.
