The member representing Ogbaru federal constituency of Anambra State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Ogene on Wednesday bagged the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, distinguished professional service award, during which he tasked media practitioners to always hold public office-holders accountable.
Ogene, who is a professional journalist and chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, and Labour Party (LP) caucus leader, said that as the watchdog of the society, the media should redefine its role.
The lawmaker, who spoke through Professor Collins Okafor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,, Awka, described the media as not just a watchdog, but a catalyst for change, a driver of progress, and a champion of the people.
He said: "In this era of uncertainty, the media plays a vital role in shaping our narrative, influencing public opinion, and holding those in power accountable.
"As the fourth estate, the media has the power to inspire, educate, and mobilize our people towards a brighter future.
"It's important to note that the practice of democratic culture remains alarmingly low among the electorate, especially in the South East, where leadership recruitment for political offices is often heavily influenced by monetary considerations.
"To address this, the media must intensify its efforts to sensitize the public, emphasizing the importance of electing candidates with the capacity to deliver good governance for the greater good.
"This shift in focus is crucial to counter the prevalent practice of voters prioritizing personal gains over collective benefits during elections, especially as Anambra election draws near.
"A healthy democracy relies on a free, independent, and diverse media ecosystem. And even the constitution recognizes that the media plays a crucial role as the fourth estate, serving as a watchdog over the three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial), in order to ensure scrutiny and to keep governments, institutions, and leaders transparent and accountable. The very reason the media is referred to as the fourth estate."
The national president of NUJ, Comrade Chris Isi-uzor represented by the national secretary, Comrade Achike Chude, and,Vice-President of NUJ, South-East zone, Comrade Emma Ifesinachi bemoaned that our country is currently on the crossroads.
Isiguzo stated that Hon Ogene, as a professional journalist, has made sterling contributions towards improving the country, and, said the award presented to him was to showcase him to the youths for emulation and to challenge him to do more.
