As the people of Anambra State go to poll on September 28 to elect local government chairmen and councillors, the state branch of the Labour Party (LP) has taken a legal action against candidates contesting the election on its platform.
The state chairman of the party, Hon. Ugochukwu Emeh said LP had since boycotted the election which he described as a sham.
A faction of the party led by Peter Okoye had earlier stated that the party was prepared for the polls as a test for the 2025 governorship election.
But Emeh, who spoke through the party's publicity secretary, Theo Egbe however emphasized that LP never sold forms, nominated, screened, or submitted its members' names to the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) for the election, questioning the legitimacy of the published LP candidates.
According to him, the party has filed a lawsuit against those impersonating LP candidates and ANSIEC and urged its members to shun the council poll.
"We are united in our decision not to participate in the Anambra local government poll. The laws governing the election are illegal and don't allow other parties to participate.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has selected candidates for chairmen and councillors, and the results are predetermined", he said.
He said the eight published candidate names as LP candidates in eight out of 21 local government areas are not its members, but mercenaries recruited by the state government.
Egbe stated that LP's lawyers are already handling the matter, adding that the party is confident of justice. He assured that the party in the state had the full support of Senator Nanede Usman-led national leadership in boycotting the Anambra LG poll.
