Mixed reactions have trailed the defection of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South in the senate, from his party, the Young Progressives Party, YPP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Senator Ubah was elected on the platform of YPP in 2019 and re-elected in 2023.
Ubah announced his defection on Thursday on the floor of the Senate and he has already been received by the national chairman of APC, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje and other party leaders.
The senator said he consulted widely with his constituents and Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu who, he said, encouraged him.
With his defection, Senator Ubah has already been named the leader of APC in Anambra State, being the highest elected officer of the party from the state.
It was gathered that the leadership of APC had already assured him of delivering him as the governor of Anambra State in 2025, which was the main reason for dumping YPP which took him to the Senate two times.
A political analyst in Anambra State, Chief Ambrose Nwafor said Ubah might be jeopardizing his political career by going to APC that has not won a single seat in Anambra State since it was formed.
"The Senator left YPP for APC because he wants to become the next governor of Anambra State in 2026."
"He should be told that APC cannot win any election in Anambra State and even the people of Anambra South will not be happy with him. I think the senator is overrating himself", Nwafor said.
Also speaking on the defection, Hon Ben Okeke said since Senator Ubah is still nursing governorship ambition, he might have found out that YPP can never take him to the Anambra Government House.
According to him, the leadership of APC might have also assured him that they will deliver him at all cost and he won't lose anything by trying his luck once more.
