Following complaints of alleged extra judicial activities by operatives of the dreaded Rapid Response Squad, RRS, formerly Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Awkuzu in Oyi local government area of Anambra State, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu on Saturday embarked on facility assessment tour of the formation with the state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

During the visit, Orutugu briefed the governor on the operational readiness of the state Police command, particularly in its efforts to re-arrest the fleeing suspects involved in the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, the member representing Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Recall that two suspects arrested in connection with the kidnap and murder of the lawmaker, allegedly escaped from RRS custody.

During the visit, Orutugu outlined the proactive measures being implemented by the police to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

As part of the proposed reforms, the CP has commenced the reorganisation of the RRS unit, including the systematic interviewing of suspects in custody.

The initiative, the CP said, is aimed at ensuring proper accountability, upholding transparency, and reinforcing the credibility of police investigations, thereby enhancing public trust in the criminal justice process.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the visit to RRS underscores Governor Soludo’s unwavering commitment to ensure the safety and security of all Anambra residents, and the CP's dedication to professional policing, community engagement, and the maintenance of law and order

"The reorganisation of the Rapid Response Squad is designed to improve the unit’s operational effectiveness in crime prevention and law enforcement.

By adopting a more structured and professional approach to handling suspects, the command is poised to strengthen evidence gathering, facilitate successful prosecutions, and enhance overall security across the state", the PPRO said.

He said that the visit was in line with the command’s commitment to transparency, strengthened security operations, and enhanced collaboration with the Anambra State government,
