By Madu Obi

THE apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to use the joy of the celebration of the 64th Independence anniversary to grant political pardon to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

National Vice President of Ohaneze, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, in an interview in Awka, argued that Kanu’s release would restore peace, enable government to identify those perpetuating violence, and totally put an end to the disturbing sit-at-home practice in the South East geopolitical zone.

"Our major demand in this year independence day celebration is for the President to use the joy attached to the day to grant political pardon to our son and the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from the DSS detention.

Ohaneze believes in Nigeria's democracy, and we also strongly believe that the release of Nnamdi Kanu will restore total peace and unity for all Nigerians residing in Igbo land.

We also call on the South East governors to sustain the security architecture and welfare of the people in the region", he said.

While urging President Tinubu to urgently do the needful to put smiles on the faces of millions of Nigerians amidst insecurity, hunger and other socio-economic challenges, Okeke-Ogene observed that the country is still developing at a snail-speed.
