Enugu State Government has disclosed that it has no plan to institute caretaker committees in the 17 local governments of the state when the tenure of the present elected Chairmen and Councilors expires in March.
Apparently debunking the rumour making the rounds that the state government was planning to impose transition committees in the local governments, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Aka Eze-Aka, said the rumour was the handiwork of desperate politicians.
Eze-Aka, who spoke to newsmen on Wednesday in Enugu, described the rumour as unfortunate and advised politicians to be patient and desist from peddling rumours capable of heating up the state.
He said, “It is just a build-up anxiety and I think the people should have patience. If the election is not going to hold, it will be made known.
“Some people who want to contest the election are becoming too anxious and desperate."
With the tenure of the incumbent chairmen and Councilors expiring in March, and the
Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), October 2023 release of the timetable for the Council election scheduled for February 24, many were expecting activities to have commenced.
Lack of the activities has given room for the rumour spreading across the state that the election might not hold as scheduled and those expressing doubts over the conduct of the poll have argued that there were no signs of preparations by the Commission in the state.
