Details have finally emerged that four people, including an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, died during the Eke Amawbia building collapse in Awka South local government area of Anambra State.

The NSCDC official was said to be buying foodstuffs for his family when the incident occurred.

The two-storey building collapsed at about 12 midday and trapped pedestrians and onlookers in the market.

The NSCDC officer, who is a father of four, was at the market purchasing foodstuff for his family when the disaster struck.

An eyewitness who knew the NSCDC officer said: "I was standing nearby when I saw him walking towards the market.

"We exchanged pleasantries, and he mentioned that he was buying food for his family. It wasn't even up to five minutes later that the building collapsed, crushing him and others."

Although rescue efforts were swift, with emergency responders rushing to the scene to pull survivors from the rubble, their efforts were not enough to save the four persons.

Experts are yet to comment on the incident, which is the fourth building collapse in Anambra State in the last few months, but speculations were rife that the building might have suffered structural defects.
