No fewer than 164 Bishops and other dignitaries will converge in the commercial city of Onitsha today for the celebration of 160th anniversary of the consecration of late Bishop Samuel Ajai Crowther, the first black Bishop who brought Christianity to Nigeria.

The Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, Rt Rev Owen Nwokolo said it would be the first time the late man of God would be celebrated, adding that although he was a Yoruba man, it was he that brought the gospel to Igbo land.

According to the Bishop, a statue of Bishop Ajai Crowder would be unveiled in the heart of the city of Onitsha as part of the celebration.

A statement by the Diocese on the Niger read: "Anambra State and precisely Onitsha Commercial City will stand still today for the man who made huge sacrifices driving the wheels of CMS In 1857 to launch Nigeria into the orbit of civilization.

Bishop Samuel Ajai Crowther, the first ever black Bishop, brought the Gospel & Christianity to this part of the world.

That is why Governor Chukwuma Soludo will lead the Anambra stakeholders to welcome over 164 Bishops of the Church of Nigeria coming down to Anambra and Onitsha precisely for the 160th anniversary of the consecration of Bishop Samuel Ajai Crowther.

The Anglican Communion of Nigeria is giving honour to whom honor is due, as Bishop Crowther brought light & education to our world. A giant statue wil be unveiled in his honor in Onitsha as his milestones underscored his unwavering commitment to advancing the cause of humanity .

Diocese on the Niger therefore occupies the premier position in Nigeria as the launching pad for all the coordinated missionary exploits in parts of Nigeria and beyond."
