The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze has said that the state legislature prides its harmonious relationship with the executive arm of government which, he added, is in the best interest of the state.

Addressing reporters as part of activities marking his one year in office, the speaker observed that the concern of the lawmakers in the 8th Assembly is the progress of Anambra State.

He said: "The important thing is that we see Anambra as one and here we do not emphasize our various political parties.

"Our agenda is Anambra and for me personally, having been in the house since 2015, I have known the pitfalls and it is easy for me to correct whatever problems that existed in the past.

"Fighting the executive arm does not benefit the people and the executive arm does not even interfere in our activities. We carry out our oversight functions without hindrance.

"We decided that the 8th assembly is for Anambra people and there is nothing like projecting the interest of political parties."

He explained that the house has set up a committee to review some of the laws passed by the previous assemblies to align with the needs and aspirations of Anambra people.

He also said that the house is already working on the full autonomy of the state legislature, adding that there are issues in the autonomy law which will be amended to ensure smooth sailing.

Udeze highlighted the achievements of the house in the last one year, among which include passage of 11 bills out of the 21 submitted to the house, as well as adoption of 62 motions and over 70 resolutions.

Some of the Bills passed include Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission Bill; Revenue Administration, Consolidation and Harmonization Bill; Anambra State Touting Prohibition Bill,2024 Appropriation Bill; Health Facilities Monitoring And Accreditation Agency Bill; Anambra State Peace Building And Conflict Management Agency Bill; and Anambra State House of Assembly Service Commission Amendment Bill.

Others are; Anambra State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission Bill; Trafficking In Person Prohibition, Enforcement And Administration Bill; Secret Cultism And Similar Activities And Prohibition Bill; Private Colleges Of Nursing And Midwifery Bill; as well as Anambra State Newspaper And Printing Corporation Repeal Bill.

"The present lawmakers' motivation is anchored on prompt implementation of the resolutions of the House of Assembly by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

This is one of the testaments to the cordial working relationship existing between the legislative and executive arms of the government which has facilitated to a great measure, the overall development of the state.

"Apart from the responsibility of law making, legislators of the 8th Assembly have done well in constituency relations and oversight duties", he said.
