FORMER governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed delight at the positive impact of his donations to institutions across the country.
Obi spoke at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala in Anambra State during which he donated another N10 million to the hospital's College of Nursing Sciences.
He said: “In furtherance of my unwavering commitment to critical and measurable areas of development, particularly health, education, and lifting people out of poverty, I visited Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala.
During the visit, I took stock of their progress and was pleased to witness the positive outcomes of our ongoing support.
Earlier this year, I donated ₦20 million to aid their efforts, and in recognition of their commendable work, I made an additional donation of ₦10 million today.”
Obi encouraged the students to remain dedicated in their pursuits, assuring them that the world would always need nurses and other healthcare workers.
He mentioned some Nigerian nurses abroad who are supporting their families and urged the students to grow with the same spirit of helping others.
Obi also took the opportunity to urge the government to pay special attention to schools, emphasizing that spending on education should be seen as an investment, and not a waste.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Rev. Fr. Onuorah Ugochukwu, revealed how Peter Obi mistakenly overpaid the hospital’s School of Nursing by ₦2.5 million previously.
Obi had pledged ₦20 million to 16 medical institutions, and was paying them in instalments. However, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital received ₦2.5 million extra.
Rev Fr. Ugochukwu said he initially thought it was an isolated mistake until other institutions reported the same, adding that when he contacted Obi about the error, the former governor was pleased with the integrity shown by authorities of the hospital.
Obi, who confirmed Fr. Ugochukwu's story said additional ₦10 million would be given to institutions that demonstrated honesty by reporting the overpayment.
He also encouraged public and private sector managers to always exhibit transparency in whatever they do.
The Secretary General of the Student Union of the school, Miss Peace Ituma, on behalf of the students, expressed gratitude to Obi, acknowledging that Obi’s contributions, which dates back to his time as governor, had significantly enhanced the school’s infrastructure devi.
During the latest visit to the hospital, Obi was taken round the complex to observe ongoing projects, including a new administrative building partly funded with his donations.
