The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi is to deliver the keynote speech during the investiture of Professor A. U. Nonyelu as the 8th Governor of Rotary International, District 9142 in Awka, Anambra State on Saturday.
No fewer than 1500 Rotarians from the district which covers the five South East states, as well as Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, are expected at the event scheduled to take place at the famous International Convention Center in Awka.
Expected to declare the event open is Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, while his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Pastor Umo Eno, will be the special guest of honour.
The ceremony will be chaired by Senator Ben Obi, while the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe and his counterpart in Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, will be the royal fathers of the day. The Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Adaora Umeoji will be guest of honour.
Addressing reporters in Awka on the preparations for the event, the incoming president, Nonyelu said Obi's lecture would center on leadership and its virtues.
According to him, the ceremony, which has as its theme, "Magic of Rotary", would showcase the vision and mission of Rotary International in the district during the coming year.
Nonyelu said membership would be his priority during the year, in addition to handling issues in education, health, provision of social services and sustaining polio eradication.
"We want to attract more members and increase foundation giving. If we give , a good chunk of it will ultimately come back to us. Infrastructure in public schools and combating diseases will also be my priority.
"Other areas we want to lay emphasis on are protecting the environment (converting waste to wealth), supporting government in growing local economy, including assisting indigent widows with over 2000 empowerment.
"Rotary International is a membership organization and membership drive will be our priority because of the enormous work we have in mind," he said.
He described Rotary as an organization of professionals who are united in the ideal of service and worthy enterprise.
"We are not only led by the 4-wheel test, but has focal areas, including promoting peace, education (dust to desk), health, water, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment and mental health," added.
He said the programmes in the district align with those of Stephanie Urchick, the Rotary International President
