Plateau State runner, Nyango Gyang emerged winner of the maiden edition of Anambra State Marathon held at the weekend, defeating other marathoners with the record time of 2hrs :26 mins to clinch the N1 million prize money.
The 35 km race, which was organized by Thanos Charity Foundation, in partnership with Federal Ministry of Sports and the Anambra State government, took off at the Ogbunike toll gate, through Enugu -Onitsha expressway, and terminated at Emmaus House, in Awka.
Ismael Sadjoh and Selengwe Constant, came second and third, with cash prizes of #500,000 and #300,000 respectively.
Speaking after the exercise, the winner, Gyang expressed his delight and commended the organizers of the marathon for a smooth competition.
Gyang, who said he got information about the marathon through his coach, added that it was his coach that encouraged him to register and participate.
He also commended the organizers for making it open for all Nigerians irrespective of tribe and religion.
President of Thanos Charity Foundation, Mr Ugochukwu Ifeanyi, explained that the idea behind the event was to identify sports talents in the state, and give them platform to showcase their talents to the world.
He added that the Foundation is determined to improve sporting activities in Anambra State, adding that his organization is partnering with the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Commerce and Wealth Creation as well as the Ministry of Health.
